Covering Collective Bargaining: Connecting Contracts to Classrooms
April 23-24, 2008 Application Deadline: The Hechinger Institute will convene a one-day workshop for journalists in the Midwest who will be covering teachers union contract talks in 2008 or 2009. School district negotiators, superintendents, researchers and labor union officials will serve as expert resources for lively discussions. The meeting will help journalists connect in their coverage what happens around the bargaining table to teaching and learning. The discussions will be organized around actual negotiations the journalists are or will be covering. The meeting also will showcase "From Contracts to Classrooms," the Institute's primer on covering collective bargaining and teachers unions. This Seminar, sponsored in part by the Joyce Foundation, will be held on the eve of the Education Writer's Association's National Seminar, which also takes place in Chicago. Some of you may want to attend both events, and we encourage you to do so.
