Current and Past Fellows
For 2009-2010, the 11 Fellows and their projects are:
- Stephanie Cohen, MarketWatch.com – How community colleges are using federal stimulus funds to train students for green jobs.
- Diana Costello, The (Westchester County, N.Y.) Journal News – A critical look at the role Westchester Community College plays in educating immigrants, from career training to language skills. The project will include newspaper articles, blog posts, video segments and photo slideshows.
- Diane D’Amico, Press of Atlantic City (N.J.) – An examination of the success rate of students in remedial courses at a New Jersey community college.
- April Dembosky, The Sacramento (Calif.) Bee – A look at how California’s community college athletic programs are faring in the state’s fiscal squeeze, from budget cuts and gender equity to recruitment of and access for minority students.
- Beth Fertig, WNYC (New York) Radio – A look at how remedial math classes at community colleges can function as a gatekeeper that prevents students from moving forward.
- Jennifer Jordan, The Providence (R.I.) Journal – How Rhode Island’s community college system is faring in an economic downturn and how it is preparing students for jobs of the future.
- Elaine Korry, National Public Radio – An examination of how private for-profit colleges are luring community college students by lowering entrance requirements while promising aid and lucrative jobs.
- Brian Maffly, The Salt Lake Tribune – The implications of the decline or loss of Utah’s rural community colleges.
- Bill Maxwell, St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times – A critical look at collaborations between community colleges and public school districts that are aimed at reducing the number of students who need remediation in college.
- Matthew Miller, Lansing (Mich.) State Journal – A intense examination of the results and costs of a community college program that retrains adult workers.
- Marisa Schultz, The Detroit News – The challenges Michigan’s community colleges face retraining workers who need help in reading and math before they can take vocational classes.
No Associate Fellows were selected for 2009-2010.

- Lygia Navarro, Latino USA,'' National Public Radio, "Divisions over open-door policies for undocumented immigrants at community colleges."
- Tom Marshall, St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times, "The role of community colleges in serving the educational needs of refugees and asylum-seekers."
- Encarnacion Pyle, The Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch, "Growth and expansion of Ohio community colleges."

- Rita Giordano, Philadelphia Inquirer: Following students enrolled in the Gateway program at Community College of Philadelphia.
- Mary Beth Marklein, USA Today: National analysis of community colleges, with state-by-state comparisons.
- Gloria Padilla, San Antonio Express-News: Minorities in Texas community colleges.
- Nancy Rodriguez, (Louisville, Ky.) Courier-Journal: Problems with transferring from community colleges to four-year colleges.
- Wick Sloane, Inside Higher Ed and "Here and Now" on WBUR-FM in Boston: Community college funding issues.
