How do school systems make sure disadvantaged students have the best teachers? With states increasing requirements in math and science, what are they doing to recruit the teachers they need? How is performance pay working in your district and across the country?
The Hechinger Institute offered a $3,500 Fellowship for Journalists interested in pursuing a major story or series on teaching and learning in late 2009.
The Fellows were selected in a competitive process based on the journalist's grasp of the issues and the strength of their proposals. The Fellows prusued in-depth projects of their own devising on a broad range of relevant topics: teacher training, effectiveness, distribution, compensation and retention.
This Fellowship was open to journalists working in all media in Wisconsin, Illinois and Indiana as well as to journalists based elsewhere who reach a national audience. The Fellowship included a weeklong, expenses-paid residency in New York City. Fellows were provided with office space, advice, connections to top experts locally and nationally, and help arranging school visits.
Here is an archive of the Fellows' projects.
