Amy Stuart Wells is a Professor of Sociology and Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. Currently, Wells is directing a Research Initiative for Teachers College's Campaign for Educational Equity that entails working on producing comprehensive reviews of research on equity-minded policies in education. Her research and writing focuses race and education and educational policies such as school desegregation, school choice, charter schools, and tracking and how they shape and constrain opportunities for students of color. Wells was the principal investigator of a five-year study of adults who attended racially mixed high schools. From that study, she is co-author of a report: "How Desegregation Changed Us: The Effects of Racially Mixed Schools on Students and Society," which will be included in Both Sides Now: The Story of Desegregation's Graduates, (University of California Press, 2008).
